Driving in poor weather can be daunting, so here are some top tips and answers to our most commonly asked questions.
1. Avoid driving in the rain if possible
If you can find a safer alternative, or wait until the weather improves, then there’s no reason to put yourself in any unnecessary danger, but this isn’t always an option and sometimes you can be caught out
2. Slow down!
The most important action that you can take while driving in any poor weather conditions is to slow down. Your stopping distance will be at least doubled! So make sure you have plenty of time to react to any hazards ahead and give yourself loads of room to stop if necessary.
3. Should you use your headlights in the rain during the day?
Absolutely! Everyone’s visibility will greatly reduced by the rain, so by using your headlights other drivers will be able to see you much more easily.
4. Avoid heavy braking
Engine brake, by releasing the accelerator, early than you usually would and lightly brake, as heavy braking could cause your car to slide.
5. Be aware of standing water
Driving through standing water can cause your car to hydroplane, which is where you will lose grip of the road and glide across the surface of the water. Try to avoid this by driving around any areas where water has collected. If you do find yourself hydroplaning, make sure to release the accelerator and avoid any heavy breaking or steering.
6. Minimise distractions
Driving in the rain can take a lot more concentration than normal due to poor visibility and muffled sounds, so doing things such as turning down your music can help you focus.
Hopefully these tips will help you feel more confident if you get caught out in the rain.
